Slot toaster plus oven or a flat-rack toaster oven?
A “toaster oven” can mean an oven that toasts bread on a flat rack or a genuine lever-operated bread slot attached to an oven. If you need the slot itself, do not rely on a Toast button alone. The Hamilton Beach 31156J page lists both a long-slot toaster and a separate oven cavity; the older Ninja ST101 is another slot-plus-oven design, but flips between its upright toaster and horizontal tray-oven positions. Those layouts solve different counter routines.
Slot plus oven in a fixed body: Hamilton Beach 31156J
The 31156J keeps its slot and oven together in one fixed enclosure. The maker lists two ordinary bread slices or one long slice, five shade settings, 16.5 liters of oven space, two rack positions and a 9-inch pizza reference. A manual OVEN/TOAST selector means a slot-toast run and an oven session are choices, not two separately timed jobs. The two racks are positions inside one cavity; they do not meet a requirement to cook at different temperatures or on different timers.
Its mode list is narrow by design: Bake, Broil, Toast and Keep Warm. Choose it when the integrated toaster slot is the point. Choose another configuration if Air Fry, convection, Dehydrate, a larger oven or separate schedules are essential. The reviewed 31156J assessment explains its 17.8-inch body and the setup details from its directly linked manual.
Earlier bare 31156: a similar layout, with a shorter published mode list
Hamilton Beach also has an exact U.S. page for the earlier bare model 31156. It describes a toaster slot and one oven cavity, but that exact page lists Bake, Broil and Toast; the 31156J and 31156G pages list Keep Warm as a fourth function. The shared Use & Care guide names the bare 31156, yet the public documents do not say whether the different lists reflect hardware or an omitted label. Do not assume Keep Warm for an appliance marked 31156 without the suffix. The separate 31156 review keeps its claims tied to that exact page and linked guide.
The bare-code page prints a three-number exterior size without labeling the axes, so it cannot establish that this model fits a hard width limit. Do not borrow the 31156J page’s 17.8-inch width for it. Compare the exact 31156 page, its linked manual and the separate assessment before relying on used-appliance dimensions or controls.
Slot plus flipping: Ninja ST101
The earlier Ninja ST101 can also toast two slices in its upright position, then flip into a horizontal tray oven. That is not the same thing as a permanent oven cavity beside a toaster slot: the ST101’s orientations are alternatives and both require the counter space and clearance for the operating position. It has no dedicated Air Fry, Dehydrate or convection control in the reviewed configuration. See its ST101 review before deciding whether the storage/flip routine is worth the extra changeover.
Flat-rack toast is different
Most countertop ovens toast on a rack inside the oven. That can be adequate if you make larger batches or use the oven for pizza and baking more often than breakfast toast. It is not lever-operated slot toasting. A flat-rack oven can still have a toaster-style toast preset, but a shopper who makes the slot itself essential should answer the finder’s slot-toaster question affirmatively and then check the result’s slice capacity.
Make room for the actual operating plan
The 31156J’s published body is 17.8 inches wide; add the clearance in its manual, plus room for the plug, cabinets and a heat-resistant landing place for the pan. Hamilton Beach’s guide says to move the unit 2–4 inches from a wall or other countertop object and not to leave it unattended. It also says to remove the baking pan before using TOAST and warns against buttered or topped items and nonbread foods in the slot. Slot convenience does not remove the need to follow the exact instructions.
For the slot-versus-flip choice, use the Hamilton Beach 31156J page, its linked guide and the Ninja ST101 page for current model-specific details. The guide is a comparison of documented configurations, not a hands-on trial or a claim about toast speed.
