Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Do you need an included wired thermometer and a preset doneness workflow for suitable proteins?
DT551 includes the wired Pro Cook probe and related controls; its guide restricts use to compatible foods and functions, excludes frozen protein and cuts one inch thick or thinner, and says an external food thermometer is still needed for safe-temperature checks.
Explore this need in the finder →Can this oven meet separate needs for both Air Fry and Dehydrate?
Yes. Both are distinct named programs on DT551 and are available from the one oven control system. They are different cooking cycles, not two independent ovens running different temperatures at once.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the probe-equipped Prestige XL fit a strict counter-width choice?
Its official body width is 17.09 inches. It fits a 17.5-inch body-width ceiling, not a 17-inch one; either threshold still needs the guide’s one-inch operating gap above and on all sides.
Explore this need in the finder →The Ninja Prestige Pro XL Countertop Oven and Air Fryer DT551 is the probe-equipped version of Ninja’s Prestige XL single-cavity oven. Its defining extra is a wired Pro Cook thermometer with a doneness workflow for compatible foods and modes. The DT501 shares its ten programs and two-level cooking idea but lacks that system. If roasts or thicker proteins are rare, the extra hardware may be more to store and clean than to use.
A broad program list, but still one oven cavity
The manufacturer lists Air Fry, Whole Roast, Air Roast, Bake, Dehydrate, Pizza, Broil, Toast, Bagel and Reheat. That gives a household a path from everyday toast to sheet-pan meals, reheating and low-temperature drying without moving between separate appliances. Ninja also describes a 90-second preheat and Smart Surround Convection. Those are the company’s claims, not independent measurements; this review does not report measured preheat times, temperature accuracy, browning consistency or energy use.
The oven has four rack positions and a two-level setting for supported cooking. That is different from a Double Stack model with separate independently scheduled ovens. The DT551 does not create two separate temperature-and-time programs: its controls address one cooking cavity, and the guide’s rack chart indicates where suitable foods and accessories go. The owner’s guide describes Air Fry and Dehydrate with two layers, but even when food is spread across levels, it remains one shared cooking cycle. If you routinely need two dishes at different temperatures and times, look at the stacked DCT601 or DCT651 instead.
The guide lists up to nine slices of bread or bagel halves as separate toast references—not a guarantee that every slice, pan handle or casserole will fit. The page gives no cubic-foot capacity or pizza diameter, so measure your largest dishes against the opening.
When the Pro Cook probe changes the choice
The wired thermometer connects beneath the door handle and works with the Pro Cook controls. For eligible food and functions, the manual describes selecting a protein type and target doneness, inserting the probe correctly and letting the oven stop when its target is reached. This can be useful when a roast is the meal’s critical component and repeatedly opening the door to check it would be inconvenient. The DT501 does not include this feature; the shared-looking stainless front and same preset count do not make the two bundles interchangeable.
The probe has a narrower job than the phrase “never under or over cook” might suggest. The DT550-series guide says not to use it with frozen protein or cuts one inch thick or thinner, and it is not compatible with every function or food. Placement in the thickest part matters, and the probe and holder are hot after cooking. The guide specifically says the integrated system does not replace an external food thermometer for checking recommended safe internal temperatures. It is most relevant to suitable roasts and thicker proteins, not toast, snacks or every air-fry basket load.
The probe does not create a second schedule: DT551 remains one cavity with one selected cycle. Compare DCT651 if you need probe guidance and two separately controlled oven areas, while remembering that its probe also has restrictions.
Counter fit and daily setup
SharkNinja lists the DT551 at 19.84 inches long, 17.09 inches wide and 13.35 inches high, at 33.62 pounds. It is rated 1,800 watts, 120 volts and 15 amps, with a 36-inch cord and one-year limited warranty. The published 17.09-inch width is across the front; the longer body extends back from the counter edge. Add the guide’s minimum one inch above and on all sides for airflow, plus room for the door, plug and hot accessories. Do not block vents or use an extension cord. Its depth and weight favor a permanent counter spot.
The current US product page lists an Air Fry basket, two sheet pans, two wire racks, a removable crumb tray, the Pro Cook thermometer and recipe material. It does not list a separate roast tray in its in-box list. The DT550-series manual refers to a roast tray in some accessory-placement instructions, so check the exact package and seller configuration if that piece is important; do not assume it is included from the manual illustration alone. The manufacturer page also shows other separately sold accessories. A pictured or offered add-on is not part of the standard bundle unless the box list says so.
The guide recommends washing accessories, then running an empty 450°F Air Roast cycle for 20 minutes in a ventilated area. Empty the crumb tray frequently and wipe cooled interior surfaces. Hand-wash accessories; do not put the sheet pan or crumb tray in a dishwasher. Unplug and cool the oven before cleaning, and let the probe cool before handling or storage.
Who should choose DT551?
Choose the DT551 when you want a versatile toaster oven that also has a real built-in probe and you expect to use the compatible doneness routine. The probe can be a meaningful difference over the DT501, while the main modes—Air Fry, Dehydrate, toast and two-level cooking—are shared. If you want those oven functions but do not need the probe, the DT501 is the more straightforward Prestige XL comparison and is listed at a lower weight. If you want two different programs to run in separate zones, compare the DCT601 or probe-equipped DCT651 rather than treating the Prestige XL’s rack levels as dual ovens.
Before buying, compare the current model code, box list and measurements with your counter. This is a source-based review, not a hands-on or lab test; cooking speed, noise, temperature accuracy and service life were not measured. See the DT501 assessment and family guide. The DT550-series guide recommends washing accessories and running an empty Air Roast cycle at 450°F for 20 minutes in a ventilated area before first use. It directs owners to empty the crumb tray frequently and wipe cooled interior surfaces; accessories are hand-wash recommended and the sheet pan and crumb tray should not go in the dishwasher. The guide refers to a Roast Tray, but the exact DT551 product page does not list one in the in-box summary; confirm the package if this piece matters. Cool and unplug before cleaning and allow the probe to cool before handling.
