A useful fit for

A 17-inch body with four-slice toast, 12-inch pizza and eight simple oven presets; compare the included 10-inch pieces and its plate-warming surface.

The main tradeoff

It has no documented convection cycle or Warm program and includes smaller pans than the full-size Smart Ovens; the ribbed top warms plates but does not add an oven mode.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Could a 17-inch-wide oven body fit in a 19-inch opening?

Breville lists the BOV650 at 17 inches wide; allow the manual’s 4 inches of side clearance on each side in the actual operating layout.

Does the BOV650 have a convection function?

No convection cycle is documented in the BOV650XL manual. Its eight presets include conventional Bake and Roast.

Does the BOV650 provide a Warm program for cooked food?

No. It has a ribbed top surface described for warming plates, but Warm is not one of the eight oven presets.

The Breville Compact Smart Oven BOV650 is a smaller conventional countertop oven with eight presets, four-slice toast capacity and a stated 12-inch pizza reference. Its listed brushed-stainless configuration is BOV650XL, with a body measuring 17 × 15.5 × 10.25 inches and a listed weight of 15.41 pounds. Breville includes a 10 × 10-inch enamel baking pan and a matching broiling rack. The product page and model-specific manual do not document a convection cycle or an Air Fry function, which helps separate this oven from similarly sized but more feature-heavy models.

Eight presets and a separate warming surface

The function list is Toast, Bagel, Bake, Roast, Broil, Pizza, Cookies and Reheat. There is no Warm oven preset. Breville’s manual describes a ribbed top surface for warming plates; that is a passive use of the outer casing, not an extra cooking program for keeping food warm. Likewise, the page’s Element IQ wording should not be read as proof of convection: the BOV650XL manual identifies four quartz heating elements and gives no convection fan/cycle in its controls or program list. If a moving-air mode is essential, this is not the version to assume will supply it.

The BOV650’s useful step up from the Mini Smart Oven BOV450 is modest but concrete: a 12-inch rather than 11-inch pizza reference, a 17-inch rather than 16-inch body, and a supplied 10-inch broiling rack in addition to the baking pan. The BOV450 is shorter and shallower, which could be decisive under a cabinet, but it has a smaller pizza reference and its page lists only the baking pan. The BOV650 therefore suits someone who wants the smallest familiar oven setup that still accommodates the larger of those two pizza sizes and has the matching broiling rack.

Do not size the counter by the case alone

The body is narrower than BOV800 and BOV845, but its depth is still 15.5 inches and it needs air around it. The manual says to leave at least four inches on both sides for circulation and recommends using a stable, heat-resistant surface. Add the plug, the manual’s clearance, door travel and a safe landing spot for the pan to your counter plan. The 17-inch width is not the whole operating footprint, and it does not mean the oven belongs inside a closed cabinet. The manual recommends plugging directly into a dedicated circuit, rather than overloading an outlet shared with other appliances.

The 10 × 10-inch enamel pieces are smaller than the 12-inch-square pans supplied with the BOV800/BOV845. Measure a casserole or roast pan you already own, including projecting handles; a 12-inch pizza rating is a different dimension from the included 10-inch square pan. The manual provides three rack positions, but the cavity is still one cooking space. For baked dishes that require a large rectangular pan or room for a tall load, inspect the usable interior and rack height before ordering, rather than treating four toast slices as a full volume measurement.

Setup and ownership fit

The controls provide the eight preset functions and adjustments for temperature and time. Breville recommends a first run in a ventilated place to remove manufacturing residues; follow the model’s own instructions rather than guessing a time from a different Smart Oven. During cooking, the surfaces and door become hot. Let them cool and unplug before cleaning. Keep foil, abrasive pads and unsuitable cleaners away from areas the manual identifies as sensitive, and empty the crumb tray as directed. The included pan and rack can be handled separately once cool.

The plate-warming ribbed top may help when serving, but it should not be mistaken for a place to store utensils or a reason to block airflow. Most of the BOV650’s value is its straightforward toaster-oven routine: toast, bagels, cookies, pizza, bake, roast and reheat, without an app or a dedicated fan cycle. If your needs are simply a little more room than the BOV450 offers, it is an identifiable middle step rather than a miniature Pro oven.

When the larger step is worthwhile

Choose BOV650 when four slices, a 12-inch pizza, 10-inch supplied pans and a 17-inch body correspond to your real countertop and dishes. Compare the BOV450 for a shorter 11-inch-pizza setup, or BOV800/BOV845 if a convection control and six-slice/13-inch references justify a larger case. If air-frying is the essential job, compare BOV680 or BOV860; the “Compact” word appears on more than one Breville model family and is not a substitute for the exact model number.

This is a source-based assessment, not a cooking test. It makes no claim about toast color consistency, actual oven temperature, noise or energy use. Breville’s US BOV650 listing and BOV650XL/B manual are the right references for the current finish, operating clearances and included pieces.
