Model differences
Hamilton Beach 31460 vs 31460J vs R31460: check the suffix before buying
These three codes describe closely related Easy View XL ovens, but the suffix changes what you are buying. The standard 31460J is the current standard-model identity in this group; 31460 is an earlier standard unit whose manufacturer archive says it is no longer available; and R31460 is the factory-recertified offer with its own stated 90-day warranty. A seller listing that drops the letter or adds an “R” should not be treated as interchangeable without checking the rating label and listing details.
The basic cooking plan is similar
The exact 31460J listing and its directly linked guide name five dial-selected settings: Air Fry, Broil, Convection Bake, Bake and Toast. The standard 31460's linked Type O95 guide also names those five settings. R31460 uses the 31460 base guide for its underlying controls. Each is a single-cavity oven, so its modes are alternatives for successive sessions; Air Fry and Convection Bake are not independent zones that can run different schedules at once.
Be careful with the R31460 promotional language. Its page advertises digital Grill and Pizza modes and a grill plate, but the detailed description and the linked five-setting guide do not confirm either a Grill control or that extra plate. The standard 31460 page has a similar promotional conflict. Do not choose either unit to meet an essential grill-plate need. A mode count is not a useful comparison if the exact control panel and supplied parts do not support it.
Capacity claims are not identical evidence
Hamilton Beach lists the 31460 and R31460 at 0.88 cubic feet, and lists six slices of toast and a 12-inch pizza as fit examples. The 31460J page gives six slices, a 12-inch pizza and an 8-pound chicken, but does not publish a cubic-foot capacity. Do not transfer the 0.88 figure to the J model just because the names look related; none of these examples is an interior measurement or a promise that every pan, handle or food load fits.
The written dimension blocks give 11.9 inches high, 18.8 wide and 14.9 deep across these listings. Image alt text on the 31460J and R31460 pages instead says 18.3 wide and 15 deep; use the larger written width for a conservative screen and measure the actual counter before relying on a tight fit. These are body dimensions, not the safe operating envelope: account for door swing, cord and the model guide's clearances. If a hard cavity-volume threshold is essential, the 31460J cannot meet it on the present published evidence.
Choose by source and warranty, not by name alone
For a new standard purchase, start with 31460J: it has a dedicated exact-model listing and guide, and the page documents a one-year limited U.S. warranty subject to the written terms. If considering R31460, decide whether factory recertification is acceptable and account for the shorter 90-day warranty stated on that page. Its similar body and control design do not make the warranty equivalent to the standard model.
The discontinued 31460 makes more sense as an earlier-reference or used-unit comparison than as a default new-product recommendation. The manual's one-year statement is not proof that a secondhand oven remains covered. Ask for the exact code and rating label, inspect the condition, and check that the mesh Air Fry basket, bake pan, oven rack and slide-out crumb tray are actually included. On a used or recertified unit, the seller's specific package and return terms matter more than a family-level accessory list.
When to choose another oven
All three are one-cavity, manual-dial designs with a small set of cooking modes. Look elsewhere if you need independent upper and lower schedules, a confirmed Grill program and plate, a numeric capacity minimum for the 31460J, or a digital menu. The 31460 family is most relevant when a countertop oven with Air Fry and separate Convection Bake selection suits your routine and the published footprint works. For a strict fit, measure the actual counter and cookware; for a strict function, require the exact code's own manual or listing to name it.
Read each model's 31460J assessment, 31460 earlier-model assessment or R31460 recertified assessment for its own limits and source details. These distinctions are based on model-specific manufacturer listings and guides, not comparative cooking tests.
