Model differences

Hamilton Beach 31401 vs 31401G vs 31401J: check the manual and footprint

Three similar Hamilton Beach codes—31401, 31401G and 31401J—make a good case for checking the complete label instead of shopping from a family name or a look-alike photo. All three manufacturer product pages describe a four-slice toaster oven with Toast, Bake and Broil, and a 9-inch pizza fit. That shared description does not settle the manual, electrical rating, included items or body shape for every exact retail suffix.

Same family image, different published dimensions

The plain 31401 and 31401G pages publish an 8.7-inch height, 11.5-inch width and 15-inch depth. The 31401J page publishes the same height but swaps the horizontal footprint: 14.9 inches wide by 11.5 inches deep. These are exterior body numbers only. They do not include door swing, cord space, a safe hot-pan handling area or any required operating clearance. If a counter is shallow, the J’s published body is shorter front-to-back; if the side-to-side width is the constraint, the plain and G pages list narrower bodies. The right answer depends on the actual counter geometry, not the words “four slice.”

All three exact pages list a 9-inch pizza, but none of those fit examples proves cubic-foot cavity volume, opening dimensions or clearance for a handle. Compare an actual pan with the opening and shelf, and leave the unknown volume unanswered if it is essential to the decision. Stainless exterior is listed; a stainless interior is not established by that phrase.

Read the guide attached to the exact page

The product pages do not link to a single identical booklet. The exact 31401G page links guide 840242203. Its rating panel names base model 31401, Type O64, 120 V / 60 Hz / 1,100 W, and the booklet says covered codes can have letter suffixes. Its toast section specifies the low rack, and the baking/broiling sections give high- and low-rack choices. It also explains how Stay On is activated by holding the timer-side buttons while turning the dial. This is the clearest source bridge for 31401G, but the appliance’s own model/type label should still match before applying the instructions.

The plain 31401 page instead links guide 840370800. The guide text is generic and does not identify 31401 or give a rating panel. It has an internal conflict: a parts diagram labels the high position for toast, while its Toast steps direct the rack to the low position. That makes it unwise to guess the correct rack placement for a plain 31401 from the file alone. Ask the manufacturer to confirm the guide for the unit or use the documentation supplied with that exact appliance. Do not import the G’s 1,100-watt Type O64 rating into the plain code.

The 31401J page directly links the 840242203 guide as well, whose label remains base 31401 / Type O64. The J-specific page remains the retail identity and lists its own 14.9-by-11.5-inch body. Keep the J and plain/G codes as separate configurations; a shared guide or family hero is not proof that every detail, included item or finish is interchangeable.

Use the questionnaire to expose the actual tradeoff

For a simple manual Toast/Bake/Broil routine, no required Air Fry mode, and body limits that admit the exact width and depth, these earlier products may remain candidates when earlier models are included. The answer changes if Air Fry, convection, a named Bagel preset, a digital display or independent cooking zones are essential: the exact pages document only three conventional functions in one cavity. The linked guides give bagel instructions as food preparation within Toast, not a fourth Bagel control. A shallow-counter question favors the J’s listed depth; a narrow-width question favors the 11.5-inch dimension on the plain/G pages. A strict cavity-volume minimum cannot be met from the published fit examples because the volume is unknown.

Each page’s temperature control and maker claims should be read at face value, not mistaken for independent tests. The plain/G pages say adjustable temperature; the separate J page gives a numeric range. Hamilton Beach’s energy-and-speed statement is limited to reheating precooked frozen chicken nuggets compared with a typical kitchen oven, not a broad efficiency or cooking-quality result. The hero asset is one family-coded image used in all three page contexts; it visibly shows a stainless one-cavity oven and three dials, but the maker does not disclose whether the art is a photo, render or composite. That shared artwork cannot identify the code on an individual used unit.

Before ordering or buying secondhand, compare the listing’s full suffix and type label with its product page, verify the supplied rack/pan/crumb tray, inspect the door and controls, and request the exact Use & Care guide. See the 31401 assessment, 31401G assessment, and 31401J assessment for their separate evidence trails.
